Intramural Sports 101: Back to Basics

  • For Students and Early Career Professionals

Are you new(er) to campus recreation? Are you new to overseeing intramural sports? Are you interested in deepening your understanding of a foundational piece of our field? Join us as we walk through some of the basics of IMs – how to get started, some key tricks of the trade, the new and different, and resources for continued learning. This two-hour session will feature both presentation and opportunities for attendee interaction and discussion.

More than Mentoring: elevating excellence by developing and refining coaching skills in collegiate recreation

In campus recreation, coaching can be pivotal in guiding and empowering students and staff to achieve their full potential. This session is designed to equip professionals in the field with the necessary tools, strategies, and insights to move beyond mentoring and enhance their coaching abilities.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participating in this session, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate at least two coaching skills such as active listening, powerful questions, curiosity, and intuition.
  • Identify the impact coaching has in various contexts.
  • Practically apply these skills to various aspects of their lives, including working in Campus Recreation.

A Long Talk: Conversations vs. Confrontations

This workshop is designed to equip participants with strategies on how to discuss inflammatory issues in meaningful conversations rather than confrontational debates. Strategies that will be covered:

  • Emotional Regulation: The workshop will teach techniques for managing emotions during conversations.
  • Open-Ended Questions: Instead of asking questions that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no,” participants will learn to ask open-ended questions that encourage deeper discussion and exploration of ideas.
  • Respectful Language: Emphasis will be placed on using language that is respectful and non-confrontational.
  • Finding Common Ground: Participants will be guided on how to identify shared values or goals, which can help bridge differences and foster a collaborative atmosphere.
  • De-Escalation Techniques: The workshop will cover methods for calming tense situations.

By utilizing this toolbox, participants will be better equipped to navigate difficult conversations in a purposeful and intentional manner.

CAS and Continuous Improvement: From Data to Action

Strong assessment practices drive meaningful improvements but developing them takes time and strategy. This workshop will provide the language, tools, and framework to build a scalable assessment strategy. Using the CAS standards as a guide, we will cover assessment fundamentals, strategic planning, and creative ways to embed assessment into your operations to focus on continuous improvement.   • At the completion of the presentation, participants will identify the common language of assessment and how to apply different assessment tools effectively.
  • At the completion of the presentation, participants will be able to formulate their own strategic assessment plan and review cycle.
  • At the completion of the presentation, participants will be able to design meaningful recommendations for program and operational improvement utilizing case studies and best practices.
